The State of AI Tool Pricing 2026

Looking for API token prices instead of subscription plans? See our LLM API Pricing Comparison →

We pulled the published entry-level price of every AI and productivity tool we have reviewed hands-on, 30 tools across 10 categories, and added up what the market actually costs: the average plan, the typical plan, how many tools are genuinely free, and which categories drain a budget fastest.

Key findings

  • The average entry-level paid plan is $24.66 a month across the 30 AI and productivity tools we reviewed, but the median is just $15.50, so a couple of expensive suites pull the average up.
  • 93% of the tools (28 of 30) offer some kind of free tier, and 80% (24 of 30) have a genuinely useful free plan, not just a trial.
  • SEO is the most expensive category at $134.47 a month on average, while Project Management is the cheapest at $8.00.
  • The cheapest paid tool is Trello at $5 a month and the most expensive is Semrush at $139.95, a 28x spread.

What an AI tool typically costs

Across 30 tools, the average entry-level paid plan works out to $24.66 a month, but that number is misleading on its own. The median, the genuinely typical tool, is only $15.50 a month. The gap exists because a small number of heavyweight suites (mostly all-in-one SEO platforms) sit far above everything else and drag the average upward. For most people building a stack, the $15.50-a-month figure is the honest expectation per tool: pick three or four tools and a realistic monthly bill lands in the $24.66 to $70 range, not the hundreds.

Most AI tools have a free tier

The single most useful finding for anyone watching costs: 28 of 30 tools (93%) offer some kind of free plan, and 24 of them (80%) have a free tier substantial enough to do real work, not just a time-limited trial. In practice that means a large slice of a typical AI stack can run at $0 if the free plans cover your usage. The tools most likely to charge from day one are specialist platforms (advanced SEO suites and a couple of premium design and automation tools); the everyday assistants, writing aids, and project tools almost all have a free entry point.

Price by category

Average entry-level monthly price for each category we cover, with the range and how many tools in it offer a free tier. SEO is the most expensive place to spend ($134.47/mo average); Project Management is the cheapest ($8.00/mo).

Methodology. Figures cover the 30 recurring-subscription software tools we have reviewed hands-on (one hardware device in our database is excluded from monthly-price math). Each price is the tool's published entry-level paid plan for 2026, using annual billing where that is the headline price. Prices are a starting reference, not a live quote, and change through the year, so confirm the current number on each tool's own site. Free-tier counts treat a genuinely usable free plan and a limited free plan together as "offers a free tier." Source data and per-tool detail live in our comparison database and individual reviews.

If SEO is the category eating your budget, Semrush is the one all-in-one suite we lean on, and it can replace several smaller tools. Building a newsletter? Beehiiv is our top pick with a free plan up to 2,500 subscribers.

Questions about AI tool pricing

How much does the average AI tool cost per month?

Across the 30 AI and productivity tools we reviewed hands-on, the average entry-level paid plan is $24.66 a month and the median is $15.50. The median is lower than the average because a few expensive suites, mostly SEO platforms, pull the average up. Most individual tools sit between $10 and $20 a month.

What share of AI tools have a free tier?

93% of the tools in this study (28 of 30) offer some kind of free plan, and 80% (24 of 30) have a genuinely useful free tier rather than a short trial. That means a large part of a typical AI stack can run at no cost if the free plans cover your usage.

Which category of AI tools is the most expensive?

SEO is the priciest category at about $134.47 a month on average, driven by all-in-one SEO suites. The cheapest category is Project Management at roughly $8.00 a month. Use the per-category table above to see the full range for each.

Are these prices accurate and current?
