ChatGPT's free tier has gotten more capable over time. Since OpenAI rolled out the GPT-5.6 generation in July 2026, free users get a fast GPT-5.6 tier for everyday use plus a limited number of turns on the fuller reasoning model. Web search is available on the free tier, which is genuinely useful for research tasks where you need current information.
The code interpreter is available in limited form. For image generation (GPT Image 2, which replaced DALL-E in 2026), you need to upgrade.

Free limits: Unlimited pages, limited blocks per page | No credit card: Yes
Notion's free plan covers one person working alone essentially without limits. You get unlimited pages, unlimited members (new), and enough features to run a solo business. The AI features now come bundled into Notion's Business plan ($20/user/month; the old standalone $10 AI add-on was retired in 2026), but the base Notion, as a project management and note-taking system, is free indefinitely.
If you're not already using Notion, the free tier is a good place to start. The learning curve is real but worth it.

Perplexity is a search engine with AI synthesis built in. You ask a question, it searches the web and gives you a cited, summarized answer. The free tier is genuinely useful for research, competitor analysis, industry background, fact-checking claims before putting them in client deliverables.
Where it beats ChatGPT: it cites sources. Every answer comes with links. That matters for business use where you need to verify things.
5. Gamma (Free Tier), Best Free Presentation AI

Gamma generates presentation decks from a prompt or outline. You describe what you want, it builds a slide deck with layout, content, and basic design. The free tier gives you 10 AI generation credits, enough to produce 2-3 complete decks before you need to think about paying.
The output quality is good enough to use as a starting point. Final polish still takes 20-30 minutes, but that beats starting from scratch in PowerPoint by a wide margin.

Run-It-Yourself Open Models: Free at Any Scale (2026 Update)
The free tiers above are hosted for you, with monthly caps. There is a second kind of "free" that got dramatically better in mid-2026: open-weights models you can download and run yourself, with no per-message limit and no vendor lock-in. Two are worth knowing.
Kimi K3, released July 16, 2026 by China's Moonshot AI, is the largest open-weight model ever built at 2.8 trillion parameters. It took the number one spot on the Frontend Code Arena (1,679 points), ahead of Claude Fable 5, GPT-5.6 Sol, and GLM-5.2, and it ranks 4th of 189 models on the broader Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, level with Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5. Its open weights are scheduled to drop July 27, 2026, meaning anyone can run it for free.
Inkling, from Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab, is the strongest open-weights model any US lab has shipped: it scores 77.6% on SWE-bench Verified, the standard test for fixing real bugs in real repositories. Near-frontier performance, zero cost to run.
The catch: "free to run" still means renting or owning a GPU, which only pays off at real volume. For a solo freelancer, the hosted free tiers above are simpler and cost nothing. But if you are doing heavy automated work, or you need your data to never leave your own machine, open-weights models are, for the first time, a genuinely serious free option.
When to Upgrade
